India must transition from a defensive to an offensive approach regarding intellectual property rights (IPR) by signing key international agreements, according to Sanjeev Sanyal, a member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister. In his working paper titled India and Global IPR Treaties, he emphasized that such a move would send a strong message to both domestic and foreign entrepreneurs.
The paper analyses the pros and cons of the four international IPR agreements: the Strasbourg Agreement Concerning the International Patent Classification 1971, Geneva Act of the Hague Agreement on Industrial Designs 1999, Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement on Geographical Indications 2015 and the Design Law Treaty 2024.
