With a just-released report, the European Patent Office (EPO) continues its patent insight reports focusing on quantum technologies. The latest report provides an overview of important patent trends in the quantum field with a focus on so-called second-generation (2G) quantum simulation technologies.
According to the report’s findings, the number of inventions in the field of 2G quantum simulation has increased dynamically over the last decade at a rate well above the increase that has been generally observed across all fields of technology.
Most commonly, patent applicants in the field of quantum simulation relied heavily on international patent applications, among other, lesser-used routes to secure patents. The high proportion of international patent applications may be interpreted as an indication of significant economic expectations in relation to quantum technologies and a corresponding multinational commercialisation strategy, the report finds.
