Bank of China became the world's second largest bank in patent applications for inventions in 2018, according to a report co-published by IPRDaily and the incoPat Invention Index Research Center.
Chinese banks accounted for 43 percent of the top 100 global banks with most patent applications for invention.
Bank of America topped the list with 386 patent applications for inventions made public last year, followed by Bank of China and China Construction Bank with 345 and 162 applications, respectively.
Six banks on the top 10 list came from China, and the US and Canada had two banks each on the list, based on data between Jan 1 and Dec 31, 2018.
