Agricultural product trademarks and GIs increase farmers' income

Member of CPPCC National Committee and Member of the CPC Committee of the State Administration for Industry and Commerce Shi Jianyuan said that the administrations for industry and commerce at all levels across the nation made obvious effects in increasing farmers' income through agricultural product trademarks and geographic indications (GIs).

Shi introduced that based on Trademark Law and Regulation for the Implementation of the Trademark Law, SAIC has recently accelerated the examination of the applications for geographic indications. And only in 2006 and 2007, 163 were registered as GIs and as of the end of 2007, the number of GI(s) registration totaled 301 pieces in China. At the same time, the administrations for industry and commerce at all levels intensified the protection of agriculture-related trademarks, especially those of seeds, fertilizer and agriculture machines.

Shi Jianyuan indicated that the administrations for industry and commerce would boost the work of agricultural product trademarks and geographic indications to be more systematical, standardized, formalized and legalized, establish long-term work mechanism in increasing farmers' income through agricultural product trademarks and geographic indications.
