On April 22, at the ongoing 2008 China IPR Criminal Protection Forum, a relevant official from the National Copyright Administration (NCA) disclosed, this year's special action on combating Internet piracy will be initiated earlier than the previous years, and the time will be sustained much longer. Video websites will become the main objective of the special action.

According to the Section Chief of the NCA Copyright Management Division Zhao Xiuling, with the popularity of the Internet, copyright infringement on the Internet become easier. At present, one of the main reasons for rampant Internet piracy in China is that Internet piracy cases are easy to be hidden, and it is difficult to deal with them.

From 2005, a special action, jointly carried out by the NCA, the Ministry of Public Security, and the former Ministry of Information Industry to combat Internet piracy, has achieved fruits and played a deterrent role to Internet piracy.

Besides Internet piracy, this year's special action will also focus on Olympic intellectual property rights protection, because of the forthcoming Olympic Games.

Zhao Xiuling also revealed that the Internet copyright monitoring network platform built up by the NCA will be put into test operation this June. By then intellectual property departments and law enforcement departments will be able to achieve resource sharing through this platform, more effectively combat Internet infringement and protect intellectual property rights.
