Various measures adopted for copyright protection

On January 8, China Copyright Protection Center, China Movie Copyright Protection Association and related cooperative websites signed a cooperation plan on China Copyright Movie Websites Alliance to enable the websites in the Alliance to execute self-discipline, supervise each other and promise to use genuine movies and combat piracy.

Actually, the cooperation plan becomes a symbol of reinforcing Internet copyright protection and maintaining the rights of copyright holders. Internet has suffered from piracy for a long time, therefore, how to intensify the IPR protection in Internet industry and enhance the awareness of copyright protection will be the emphases in this year.

Apart from the Alliance, in 2008, China will introduced more new measures to strengthen copyright protection including setting up Internet Copyright Recordation and Verification Platform, launching Notice and Counter-Notice Standard, and building the Intermediation Center of China Internet Association.

The above-mentioned measures will have an impact on online dissemination of genuine works, protection of the illegal interests of copyright owners, and the healthy development of Internet industry.

However, Internet copyright protection remains in the initial phase in China and the work will be more onerous in future. It needs the online supervision of government and self-discipline of the industry.

Recently, when expatiating on the relations between constructing innovative country and copyright protection, Yan Xiaohong, Vice Director of General Administration of Press and Publication and National Copyright Administration stated that by 2020, China will develop into an innovation-based country. While an objective criterion for an innovation-based country is that the contribution rate of knowledge to social and economic development should exceed 70%.
