Ceremony for the WIPO-SIPO Award for Chinese Outstanding Patented Invention & Industrial Design held in Beijing

On November 30, the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) and World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) solemnly held the WIPO-SIPO Award for Chinese Outstanding Patented Invention & Industrial Design in Beijing. NPC Vice Chairman Yan Junqi attended the ceremony and awarded prizes to the representatives. SIPO Commissioner Tian Lipu took part in and delivered the ceremony and WIPO Director-General Francis Gurry delivered a speech via video.
In his remarks, Tian Lipu pointed out that in the context of China’s implementing IP strategy, the credibility, authority and influence of China patent awards have been gradually improving and such awards played an important role in leading innovation, promoting industrial upgrading and impelling the development of China’s IP development, in particular in improving the quality of China’s indigenous IP and component optimization as well as raising the IP protection and management consciousness of the whole society.
According to Tian Lipu, this year the patent appraisal presented three spotlights, i.e. award-winning patents contained advanced technologies, high innovation and resource utilization; second, winning projects have strong market competitiveness and significant economic benefits and have formed big production scale, high production level and strong industrial supporting capacity, contributing a lot to regional economic development; winning enterprises have advanced IP management and IP system has integrated into businesses’ commercial activities and become enterprises’ core competitiveness.
Tian Lipu emphasized that at present, China was in the crucial period to accelerate the transformation of the mode of economic development. The working report of the 18th CPC National Congress put forward to “carry out innovation-driven developing strategy”. The report also stressed “implementing IP strategy and enhancing IP protection”. It is a must to accurately know the new need of China’s economic and social development to IP work and to integrate IP system into China’s innovative mechanism.
At the ceremony, Yan Junqi, Tian Lipu, SIPO Vice Commissioners He Hua and Yang Tiejun, discipline inspection team leader Xiao Xingwei and SIPO Vice Director Bao Hong respectively awarded prizes to the winning representatives of China Patent Gold Prize and China Design Gold Prize. It is reported that this year, the prizes were conclusive of 20 China Patent Gold Prizes, 5 China Design Gold Prizes, 262 China Patent Excellent Awards and 44 China Design Excellent Awards. These winning projects were all knowledge- and technology-intensive ones, had clear ownership of rights, high resource utilization and good comprehensive benefits. For economic benefits only, from the patent industrialization to the end of 2011, 25 projects winning the 14th China Patent Gold Awards created 165.5 billion yuan of sales and the profit reached 34.6 billion yuan.
