December’s fourth edition of the Business of Intellectual Property Asia Forum (BIP Asia) is set to examine how intellectual property can help grow business. With a theme of Intellectual Property: Powering Business Expansion, the two-day event, which takes place on December 4-5, is set to be the forum’s biggest yet with more than 2000 industry professionals expected to attend.
Jointly organized by the Government of the Hong Kong SAR, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and the Hong Kong Design Centre, BIP Asia has, in just three short years, grown to be one of the most important intellectual property (IP) events in the region covering multiple facets of IP, including financial, legal and business issues as well as the latest developments in the industry. The Asia IP Exchange (AsiaIPEX) was officially launched at last year's forum and today, it has featured more than 25,000 tradable IPs and more than 20 local and overseas strategic partnerships.
With BIP Asia and AsiaIPEX, Hong Kong is fast establishing itself as the region’s hub for IP trading and management, as well as an IP service support supplier - in May, the SAR became the first Asian hosts for the International Trademark Association’s annual meeting. This year’s BIP Asia will feature more than 60 internationally renowned IP experts as the forum explores how the right IP strategy can help businesses grow.
Mr. C.Y. Leung, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong SAR, Francis Gurry, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization and Anthony Taubman, Director of the World Trade Organization’s Intellectual Property Division will deliver the conference’s opening remarks. Confirmed speakers include Joo Sup Kim, LG Electronics Vice President of Intellectual Property, Toshimoto Mitomo, Sony Executive Vice President of Intellectual Property and Brian Hinman, Chief Intellectual Property Officer, Philips Intellectual Property and Standards, who will speak about the IP business potential behind innovation.
Kwang Jun Kim, Samsung Display Senior Vice President and Chief Intellectual Property Officer will join with two more high-calibre brand names for a session on global patent strategies for emerging technologies, while Hong Kong Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Mr. Greg So will deliver the keynote speech at a luncheon on the opening day of the event.
The two-day forum includes a broad range of breakout sessions ranging from award-winning case studies to seminars on wearable technology and managing IP in cultural industries. Many of the seminars offer practical advice, including legal tips, workshops on IP valuation and seminars on trademarks and patent cross-licensing and negotiation.
This year will also feature an expanded exhibition zone, featuring technology brands and IP-related companies providing IP consultations and customized business matching meetings. AsiaIPEX will also be part of the exhibition zone, helping to facilitate IP trading opportunities. The forum has also scheduled several speed-networking and business matching opportunities throughout the two-day programme to provide delegates further opportunities to connect and interact - essential elements of furthering growth through IP.
